Seeking Property

The vision that has grown out of the Niwot Homestead and its affiliate properties is Community Land Stewardship.

Rather than working within traditional for-profit food economies, which inherently create a strong separation and often financial barrier between consumers, farmers, and ecology, we are working to create alternative food systems that operate outside the traditional for-profit economy, empowering people to take food production and ecosystem stewardship into their own hands.

We are seeking a property that will allow us to continue growing this vision by:

Cultivating a diverse agricultural ecosystem sculpted to maximize ecosystem health while providing a complete bioregional diet:

  • Vegetable and staple crops cultivated with pigs, chickens, and perennial hedgerows
  • Rotational grazing of cattle and goats on silvopasture, with trees planted for fruit, forage, and habitat
  • Forest gardening with fruit and nut trees and medicinal herbs
  • Celebrating native, bioregional food plants

Stewarding a member community of up to 100 individuals who participate in all aspects of tending the farm and ecosystem and share in its abundance

Developing a school of agroecology to provide intimate training to a smaller cohort of aspiring land stewards

The ideal property will:

  • Be at least 20 acres, or have adjacent acreage available to use/lease
  • Be available for long term stewardship, whether through lease, acquisition, or partnership
  • Enable our organization to be the primary land managers
  • Have well or ditch water rights available for at least a portion of the acreage
  • Have (or have ability to construct) a commercial kitchen and large gathering space
  • Have the ability to offer unrestricted access to roughly 100 members
  • Be within 15 minutes of a key population center (ie; Longmont, Boulder, Lyons, Loveland, etc…)
  • Be able to receive the necessary permits from the county to conduct activities as outlined above
  • Be able to house (or have housing constructed) to host at least 3 individuals (preferred, may consider other circumstances though)
